Hazardous Plants

Hazardous Plants

Posted by Gary Richter, MS, DVM

As humans, we often like to decorate our homes with plants. However, we can unknowingly be bringing harmful plants into our pet’s domain. Normally animals tend to avoid plants that are hazardous, but animals that are not out in the wild, having been forced to learn survival strategies do not interpret plants in the same ways. House Cats can be particularly intrigued when a new plant comes into the home and take a nibble or more! That is why it is very important to know what plants can do harm to your pets. If you do find that your house (or right around the house) has some of the plants that fall on the hazardous list consider placing them in areas of the home that animals cannot access.

The ASPCA has made a comprehensive list of hazardous and toxic plants with full-color pictures. Please find this list on the ASPCA site.

If your animal has eaten any part of a plant found on the above list please contact your local vet and/or emergency services.

Here in Oakland if it is after hours please contact PETS Referral Center.
