In honor of National Nutrition Month, this March we are celebrating nutrition education! We believe in healthy food for healthy pets.
Perhaps the most important step in promoting health is making sure your pets’ nutritional needs are being met through all stages of life. Food is medicine. We eat it every day, and over time it can either help or harm us. The same is true for our furry companions. Provide your pets with high-quality foods and fresh, clean water. You might ask, “how do I know which foods are high quality?” At Holistic Veterinary Care, we can answer your questions and guide you to healthy choices. To get your pet started off on the right paw, take a look at Dr. Richter’s top 5 tips.
Dr. Gary Richter’s Top Nutrition Tips:
- When it comes to foods for dogs and cats, the closer to “whole foods” the better. Choose foods that do not contain “by-products” or highly processed ingredients.
- Many animals do better on grain free diets. They are often lower in simple carbohydrates and may be less allergenic to some animals.
- Many pets do very well on raw food diets. Raw food diets have been shown to have 3-4 times less allergens than cooked diets with the same ingredients.
- If you are making food for your pet, balancing the diet is important but not that difficult. It is best to consult with a veterinarian to make sure your pet is receiving all the nutrients they need to be healthy and strong.
- As a general rule, cats are better off eating fresh food or canned, grain-free food rather than dry. Dry foods are higher in calories and carbohydrates that can contribute to obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders.
